Is Google’s Bard an Alternate to ChatGPT?

2023 has been quite a fruitful year so far. After the successful public launch of OPenAI’s chatGPT, Google too has boarded the generative AI bandwagon, with its newest baby – Bard.

The service announced quite unexpectedly by Google CEO, Sunder Pichai, is still a work in progress and is being tested by very few trusted testers before the tech behemoth makes it officially available to the general public in the coming weeks.

What is Bard?

Pichai, in his latest blog post, is describing the tools as an ‘experimental conversational AI service, powered by Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA).

  • Bard is going to be an interesting potpourri of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models.
  • It intends to offer fresh, high-quality responses from around the web and simplify complex topics.
  • From NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to the best soccer strikes, Bard will be the ultimate outlet for quenching the creative thirst.
  • You can ask Bard to plan a baby shower for your friend, compare two Oscar movies, or get some lunch ideas based on what’s available in the fridge.
  • Google will take into account the external feedback along with the company’s own internal testing to ensure Bard’s responses are safe, secure, and accurate. We’re excited for this phase of testing to help us continue to learn and improve Bard’s quality and speed.

As of now, the service will be released on Google’s lightweight version of LaMDA as it will be a relatively smaller model and would not require much computing power. Google is focused on the testing phase to learn and improvise Bard’s speed and quality.

Google’s Earnest Appreciation for AI

While Bard still remains elusive, what Pichai stressed is how Google is focussing on building AI in its several products, including Search.

We all as tech buffs know Google’s earnest love and appreciation towards AI. Google’s first Transformer model, BERT was way ahead of his time in terms of understanding the human language and its complexities. And then, around two years ago, Google rolled out MUM, which was considered 100 times more powerful than BERT. It was embedded with a multi-lingual understanding of information, meaning it could select key moments in videos and also provide critical information like crisis support, in more languages.

Google’s latest AI technologies — like LaMDA, PaLM, Imagen, and MusicLM — are further enhancing this by exploring new ways to engage in different mediums like languages, and images to video and audio.

Enhancing the Search features

He further asserted that soon AI-powered features in Search will distill complex information and offer numerous perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, to enable users to understand the big picture and learn more from the web.

Be it seeking additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like steps to get started as a beginner. These new AI features will begin rolling out on Google Search soon.

One of the prime focuses for Google is discovering new ways to see how AI can deepen its understanding of info and convert it into helpful details in a more efficient manner. This will enable the user to find answers and get going. Typically, users turned to Google for quick facts and answers but now, they want deeper insights.

For instance, earlier people wanted to know the number of keys in a piano, but now they’d like to know which instrument is easier to learn – a guitar or a piano. Users no longer just need facts; they are looking for opinions and perspectives. In such cases, AI can be the tailor-made technology offering additional perspectives, like blogs, videos, etc of people playing both the instruments and the basic steps to start. Soon Google’s Search will be boasting these smart features.

Google’s announcement of Bard reflects the company’s approach and commitment to AI and technology in general.
