Experts Discuss HR & Future Of Work Predictions For 2024

Advancements in generative AI significantly reshaped the way businesses operate in 2023. Many HR teams and departments began experimenting with these tools to streamline tasks and improve efficiencies. As we look ahead to 2024, what can we expect from generative AI when it comes to the future of work? We asked six technology experts to share their predictions.

Effective AI Governance Will Be Integral

AI is already embedded into our daily lives in many ways, and we should expect this trend to not only continue, but flourish, in 2024.

According to Gartner research, more than 80% of businesses are set to use Generative AI by 2026.

However, Ed Challis, Head of AI Strategy and General Manager for Communications Mining, UiPath argues that “the ability to deploy the technology responsibly is still largely immature, with concerns from executives around risk and governance.

“2024 will be the year this perception changes and organizations see AI progress from aspiration to implementation,” said Challis. “Effective AI governance is critical for driving strong AI results. If implemented correctly, it can go further than positively affecting productivity and efficiency – it can also enhance an organization’s risk and governance posture.”

AI’s Increasing Importance In Recruitment & Training

When looking at recruitment and training, Merijn te Booij, GM of Workforce Engagement at Genesys believes that AI will be used by companies to transform how they approach training and employee attrition.

“I predict next year we will see generative AI transform employee training and curriculum building,” said te Booij. “Currently, companies deliver standardized training across their workforce or employee segments in like-roles because it’s not scalable to tailor it to individuals. Often, we see the same training applies to senior, long-tenured people-leaders as it does junior-level staffers who are still early in their careers. Generative AI capabilities will vastly reshape how organizations build training personalized to each employee. It will also help organizations automate coaching, making it more efficient to deliver individualized support based on the precise needs of each employee.

In the future, te Booij believes that “organizations will also be able to tap into generative AI to help them predict attrition, retention, and career possibilities. Through more personalized coaching and training, it can provide insights into understanding which employees may leave or who may have higher potential. This will be discerned from signals within conversations, displayed behaviors, and performance, helping organizations understand where their employees fall on the spectrum so they can personalize plans to re-engage them, assign training, and help them advance their careers.”

Pamela Maynard, CEO, Avanade agrees, highlighting the countless benefits of adopting AI within business to streamline recruitment:

“AI allows recruiters to use the power of data to make better decisions, which can include analyzing CVs and job applications as well as assisting with the sourcing and screening of candidates. As AI begins to develop and has more data behind it, the technology can carry out tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as predicting a candidate’s success ahead of hiring and even how they may fit culturally, in an organization.

“With the help of AI in their role, recruiters can be more creative, and innovative and bring bold ideas to their work. With AI on hand to help with administrative tasks, workers can gain around 20 additional hours per week. The recruiting process becomes more time-efficient for recruiters as time-consuming and repetitive tasks such as screening, candidate sourcing, and initial communications can become automated.”

Humanity Is At The Core Of Our AI Innovation Journey

However, with AI permeating into so many of our lives, businesses will find themselves in need of a balance between new technologies and the essential human element. Companies will ponder how best to upskill the workforce alongside advancing technology, for organizational growth.

In line with maintaining the human element, Aaron Skonnard, CEO and Co-Founder of Pluralsight argues that “if you want to get the most out of AI, and any other technology, you need people with the skills to leverage that technology and who have skills across other domains important to your business.

AI can only take an organization so far. It’s the humans powering the technology that will truly drive innovation.

Skonnard also believes that “the next wave of tech learning requires leaders to bring learning directly to their teams, within the flow of work. Learning should become more of a conversation today, where content is the answer to specific questions that arise in the flow of work. Tech learning solutions need to embrace that conversational modality and experience. By making learning a natural part of technologists’ workflow, organizations will naturally begin to see their skills gaps close.”

The Centerpiece Of Leadership Transformation: Putting Employees At The Core

With employee expectations on the rise, we anticipate seeing a paradigm shift towards employee-centric leadership that fosters transparency, work/life balance, and a transformation in organizational strategies to meet these evolving workforce expectations.

Richa Gupta, CHRO, Globalization Partners (G-P) highlights that the future of work is here, but notes it is time for the leaders of the future to stand up and prioritize promoting a flexible workforce to maintain the UK’s position as a leading global economy for the new year.

“Employees expect more from leadership than ever before – more transparency, more commitment to work/life balance, and more willingness to incorporate their sentiments and preferences into the workplace. The mindset has shifted from ‘my paycheque to my purpose’; ‘my boss to my coach’; ‘my annual performance review to ongoing development conversations’. It is not an employer’s market anymore; it’s an employee’s market and workers aren’t afraid to search elsewhere to find a workplace, or leader, that fits their needs.

Gupta believes that in response “there will continue to be not only a transformation of leadership styles but in the overall organization of leadership strategy. Successful leaders will need to prioritize qualities and strategies that promote a flexible and open-minded workforce where credibility, reliability, and trust are paramount.”

Collaborative Teamwork Set To Shift Towards Greater Intentionality

With the evolving challenges that ensue from responsibly navigating the adoption of AI within business, Bryan Stallings, Chief Evangelist, Lucid Software predicts that “2024 will see teams becoming more confident and intentional about increasing the frequency with which they collaborate asynchronously.

“This shift is being driven by firms realizing that endless follow-up and planning meetings are hindering impactful collaboration and productivity. Effective working will continue to be defined by positive outcomes and the journey of how teams achieve those outcomes will be equally important. Additional gains will be realized as teams continue to embrace agile practices, and leverage techniques that help them to align more quickly on a shared vision and collaborate effectively to deliver great results.

Stallings concludes that as this future of work continues to take shape over the next twelve months, we will soon be saying, “How did we ever work any other way?”

A Glimpse Into 2024

As seen in 2023, it’s clear AI is reshaping the workforce of the future. 2024 will likely continue to bring surprising developments in AI applications, presenting new opportunities for companies to enhance employee support, whilst also streamlining processes.

However, the impact of AI on the world of work in 2024 and beyond is still unfolding. Business leaders must seize the moment here to implement upskilling initiatives, so employees have access to effective and continuous tech training regimes that will boost their familiarity with the integral tools moulding the future of work.

AI innovation is poised to raise the digital economy’s impact up to as much as one-third of global gross domestic product1,” Gelsinger said. “Intel is developing the technologies and solutions that empower customers to seamlessly integrate and effectively run AI in all their applications — in the cloud and, increasingly, locally at the PC and edge, where data is generated and used.”

Gelsinger showcased Intel’s expansive AI footprint, spanning cloud and enterprise servers to networks, volume clients and ubiquitous edge environments. He also reinforced that Intel is on track to deliver five new process technology nodes in four years.

“Intel is on a mission to bring AI everywhere through exceptionally engineered platforms, secure solutions and support for open ecosystems. Our AI portfolio gets even stronger wit launch of Intel Core Ultra ushering in the age of the AI PC and AI-accelerated 5th Gen Xeon for the enterprise,” Gelsinger said.

Intel Core Ultra Powers AI PC and New Applications

Intel Core Ultra represents the company’s largest architectural shift in 40 years and launches the AI PC generation with innovation on all fronts: CPU compute, graphics, power, battery life and profound new AI features. The AI PC represents the largest transformation of the PC experience in 20 years, since Intel® Centrino® untethered laptops to connect to Wi-Fi from anywhere.

Intel Core Ultra features Intel’s first client on-chip AI accelerator — the neural processing unit, or NPU — to enable a new level of power-efficient AI acceleration with 2.5x better power efficiency than the previous generation2. Its world-class GPU and leadership CPU are each also capable of speeding up AI solutions.

As important, Intel is partnering with more than 100 software vendors to bring several hundred AI-boosted applications to the PC market — a wide array of highly creative, productive and fun applications that will change the PC experience. For consumer and commercial customers, this means a larger and more extensive set of AI-enhanced applications will run great on Intel Core Ultra, particularly compared to competing platforms. For example, content creators working in Adobe Premiere Pro will enjoy 40% better performance versus the competition3.

Intel Core Ultra-based AI PCs are available now from select U.S. retailers for the holiday season. Over the next year, Intel Core Ultra will bring AI to more than 230 designs from laptop and PC makers worldwide. AI PCs will comprise 80% of the PC market by 20284 and will bring new tools to the way we work, learn and create.

New Xeon Brings More Powerful AI to the Data Center, Cloud, Network and Edge

The 5th Gen Intel Xeon processor family, also introduced today, brings a significant leap in performance and efficiency5: Compared with the previous generation of Xeon, these processors deliver 21% average performance gain6 for general compute performance and enable 36% higher average performance per watt across a range of customer workloads7. Customers following a typical five-year refresh cycle and upgrading from even older generations can reduce their TCO by up to 77%8.

Xeon is the only mainstream data center processor with built-in AI acceleration, with the new 5th Gen Xeon delivering up to 42% higher inference and fine-tuning on models as large as 20 billion parameters9. It’s also the only CPU with a consistent and ever-improving set of MLPerf training and inference benchmark results.

Xeon’s built-in AI accelerators, together with optimized software and enhanced telemetry capabilities, enable more manageable and efficient deployments of demanding network and edge workloads for communication service providers, content delivery networks and broad vertical markets, including retail, healthcare and manufacturing.

During today’s event, IBM announced that 5th Gen Intel Xeon processors achieved up to 2.7x better query throughput on its watsonx.data platform compared to previous-generation Xeon processors during testing 10. Google Cloud, which will deploy 5th Gen Xeon next year, noted that Palo Alto Networks experienced a 2x performance boost in its threat detection deep learning models by using built-in acceleration in 4th Gen Xeon through Google Cloud. And indie game studio Gallium Studios turned to Numenta’s AI platform running on Xeon processors to improve inference performance by 6.5x over a GPU-based cloud instance, saving cost and latency in its AI-based game, Proxi11.

This kind of performance unlocks new possibilities for advanced AI – not only in the data center and cloud, but across the world’s networks and edge applications.

AI Acceleration and Solutions Everywhere Developers Need It

Both Intel Core Ultra and 5th Gen Xeon will find their way into places you might not expect. Imagine a restaurant that guides your menu choices based on your budget and dietary needs; a manufacturing floor that catches quality and safety issues at the source; an ultrasound that sees what human eyes might miss; a power grid that manages electricity with careful precision.

These edge computing use cases represent the fastest-growing segment of computing — projected to surge to a $445 billion global market by the end of the decade — within which AI is the fastest-growing workload. In that market, edge and client devices are driving 1.4x more demand for inference than the data center12.

In many cases, customers will employ a mix of AI solutions. Take Zoom, which runs AI workloads on Intel Core-based client systems and Intel Xeon based-cloud solutions within its all-in-one communications and collaboration platform to deliver best user experience and costs. Zoom uses AI to suppress the neighbor’s barking dog and blur your cluttered home office, and to generate a meeting summary and email.

CircleCI is redefining what CI/CD tools do to manage the novel complexity that AI/ML introduces so that teams can confidently go from idea to innovation.

As organizations race to build, deploy, and manage AI-enabled applications on a commercial scale, they’re grappling with how to get started. With its new inbound webhooks and evaluation platform integrations, CircleCI is redefining what CI/CD tools do to manage the novel complexity that AI/ML introduces so that teams can confidently go from idea to innovation.

“AI’s infusion into applications increases the complexity of risk and trust issues with the addition of autonomous software. Traditional testing tools don’t deal with probabilistic or uncertain testing outcomes,” wrote Diego Lo Giudice, Vice President and Principal Analyst at Forrester. “Because testing AI-enabled applications is a key element of gaining users’ trust in AI-based systems, developing a systematic and industrialized approach to testing AI-infused applications is now table stakes.”

CircleCI’s latest features are pivotal in helping teams manage the complexity of developing AI-powered applications by providing a structured, automated pipeline spanning from building and testing to training and monitoring them. Its new inbound webhooks are entirely adaptable to all sources of change, making it the most change-agnostic CI/CD tool on the market. This also marks a necessary departure from a version control-centric approach to now allowing users to trigger pipelines through various sources. This shift is crucial as AI-powered applications live outside the repository, with code, data, and the LLM all interacting to drive novel product experiences for end consumers. Therefore, engineering teams must rethink how they test, release, and retrain their applications.

The custom Hugging Face integration is a new trigger to kick off pipelines. Developers can now run automated workflows any time a model on Hugging Face changes, so engineering teams can be confident that their application continues to behave as expected. The LangSmith integration is the first of many evaluation platforms to be supported on CircleCI, enabling robust testing for non-deterministic outcomes. Testing AI-enabled applications is new territory for professional software teams, and these new capabilities from CircleCI will dramatically up-level developer confidence when building and validating LLM-powered software.

“Software teams are building the next wave of AI-powered applications that solve specific customer pain points,” said Rob Zuber, CTO at CircleCI. “While many teams find it difficult to get started, at the end of the day, we’re still building software. You already have 95% of the tools needed to do it. By supporting AI product builders with CircleCI’s comprehensive CI/CD tooling, engineering teams can confidently build upon years of key learnings while also addressing the novel changes AI introduces.”

CircleCI also introduced its new Orb for Amazon SageMaker to help teams using Amazon SageMaker ship their model to production. The Orb enables basic deployment to Amazon SageMaker, monitors deployments for problems, and quickly rolls back endpoints should something go awry. It also executes different deployment strategies, namely canary and blue/green style deployments.
